Managing Online Proctored Examinations

Like businesses have embraced a hybrid workplace, "Exams from Remote" are here to stay. Managing online proctored exams is hassle-free and fraud-proof once the DigiProctor’s examination proctoring system is installed and your team is trained. While on-premise examination mode shall continue, online examinations will define the future. It would be apt to say that educational institutions will migrate to a hybrid approach, and we will witness the complete digitalization of examination processes in years to come.

Exams from Home are here to Stay!

Remote or Online proctoring is a solution that ensures online examinations are carried out in a controlled and cheat-free environment without the need to assemble test takers in test centres or classrooms to monitor them.

Online proctoring solution eliminates the need to conduct exams on-premise (with onsite invigilators) by allowing proctors to manage test takers in a controlled manner from remote.

Online proctoring software has become a key component of online education that awards credibility to test result outcomes.

Modes of Online Exams

Remote mode

Remote mode: Test taker’s sit for their exams from remote locations.

Centre-Based Test

Centre-Based Test (CBT) mode: Test takers take their tests on Digiproctor platform while in a classroom or test centre.

Hybrid

Hybrid mode: A combination that gives flexibility to deliver tests in both modes simultaneously - some test takers are in remote locations while others in test centres or classroom.

Test Results Credibility concerns when Exams Move Online!

Examination bodies' biggest challenge has been to conduct examinations with fair practices and deliver results with academic integrity. These concerns magnify manifolds when exams move online.

DigiProctor’s Examination Management service provides a fully digitalised environment to conduct online assessments with built-in proctoring solution. DigiProctor’s online proctoring solution ensures the integrity of test outcomes by stopping students from receiving any unauthorized assistance for answering questions in their test either from other students taking the test or from outside sources. It detects and stops students from using disallowed resources (Internet, books, cheat sheets etc.) to answer questions in the test.

Advanced remote proctoring technologies and human proctors preserve the test integrity by detecting and deterring students from receiving any unauthorized assistance during the test.

Technologies used by Online Proctoring Software

Manage online test integrity using Video Recordings, AI-assisted Remote Proctoring, Facial Recognition, Secure Browser, and Innovative Test Delivery solution.

  • Lock students browser to deter internet browsing
  • Record live video feed from test taker’s webcam
  • Pick audio (sound) from test taker’s microphone
  • Capture image of test taker’s laptop screen activity
  • 360-degree scan of Test taker’s Environment
  • Chat sessions and Proctor Notes for feedback
list-view-technologies

Remote proctoring technologies fetch and analyse test takers’ activity in real-time and build a ‘trust profile’ of the test takers – known as the ‘TRUST SCORE.’ AI-Assisted proctoring mode enables examination heads to scale the system with a limited number of human invigilators by building a trust profile and displaying it to proctors while the test is going on.

Proctors analyse Live Video feeds of Student’s Test Activity

DigiProctor’s proctoring dashboard displays all this information in real-time to enable proctors to monitor the test takers’ activity and take timely action. It provides the proctors a dashboard to View, Chat, and even Terminate the test and more…

proctor
  • Displays test taker’s screen for proctors to ‘Grab Screen’
  • Pause the test to give a warning to students
  • Enables Chat box to Communicate with test takers
  • Request for 360-degree scan of student’s test room

The dashboard displays Live Video streams of the test takers for continuous monitoring.

The test is conducted in a highly secure and controlled environment. The feeds are viewed by the remote proctor and if the student is found cheating, the student’s exam can be terminated remotely by the proctor.

The administrator of DigiProctor remote proctoring application can manage (i.e., Add/Edit/Delete) proctors and allocate virtual test rooms for invigilation. More than one room can be assigned to a proctor, and there is a provision to toggle between test rooms, making the model highly scalable.

DigiProctor allows educational institutions and organizations to select the mode most suitable for the specific examination. The organization's administrator can decide on the proctoring mode based on the stake of the examination and the student-proctor ratio.

  • Use the automated AI Proctoring Mode when the number of students taking the test is large and the number of proctors available to monitor them is limited.
  • Use the dual monitoring AI-assisted Human Proctoring Mode to display test takers’ test activity on the proctor dashboard to monitor any non-compliant behaviour.
  • Use Only-Human Proctoring Mode to simulate the conventional on-premise mode, where proctors visually monitor students with no aid from the AI engine.

TRUST SCORE

trust score

DigiProctor provides Trust Scores as a mechanism to enforce Test Integrity. Trust score gathers information on events during the test. Students start off their tests with a trust score of 100, which is progressively reduced with every non-compliant behaviour either automatically by AI-engine or manually by proctors.

The Exam Office specifies disciplinary actions including terminating the student’s test when the score goes below a threshold.

AI engine detects and evaluates non-compliant behaviour to build a trust profile known as the 'TRUST SCORE' based on trust discriminator parameters. This information is displayed on the proctor's dashboard. The Trust scores can also be reduced by the proctor (manually) and is a highly reliable measure of test integrity.

DigiProctor Deep Proctoring

Unlike conventional proctoring techniques used by competitors, in addition to monitoring camera/audio feed and screen captures, DigiProctor supplements it with “Deep Proctoring” to monitor events happening deep within the students’ operating systems, which are not visible to the remote proctors.

This is necessary, because students today are highly technology savvy and are using advanced tools to cheat. These tools run deep within the students’ machines at the operating system level. DigiProctor’s Deep Proctoring scans the students’ machines every 30 seconds to detect and kill these tools, and also all unauthorised applications, rogue browsers, virtual cameras, screen sharing software, virtual machines, instant messaging apps, HDMI & USB ports & KVM switches.

FAQs: Making Exams Outcomes Fail-Safe

Digiproctor provides online exam proctoring services using AI and humans or a combination of the two. Educational institutions and organizations opt for AI-assisted (auto) Proctoring services when the student count is significantly large. AI-assisted proctoring controls the test environment by detecting and stopping students from using cheating aids or demonstrating mischievous behaviour. The AI-assisted proctor issues alert in real-time and reduce the ‘trust score’ of the test takers in real-time. Hence, the automated proctoring mode effectively closely monitors the students during the examination.

DigiProctor application closely monitors the test takers when they authenticate and sit for the examination. DigiProctor also provides trust scores as a mechanism to enforce exam integrity.Trust score is a good indicator of the test takers test result credibility.

Students start off their tests with a trust score of 100, which is progressively reduced with every non-compliant behaviour either automatically by AI-engine or manually by proctors. The Exam Office can specify disciplinary actions including terminating the student’s test when the score goes below a threshold.A final list of trust scores of all students is available to professors at end of exam, which gives data-driven deep insights into their behaviour during the exam.

Lockdown Browsers can prevent cheating by locking the test-takers within their test window. Locking test-takers prevents them from going out to the Internet during the exam to google for answers. DigiProctor’s Next Generation Lockdown browser makes permitted website and OERs accessible while staying within the lockdown environment. This allows faculty members to include case studies, situational analysis, data interpretation etc. test higher-order learning of the students.

When Question Design & Delivery approach is integrated it guarantees perfect exam integrity. Question Design & Delivery includes: (1) designing of questions that test higher-order learning, (2) delivery of question papers that are unique to every test-taker, and (3) defining maximum time within which question has to be answered, and (4) permitting only a single question to be visible with no way to go back to a previous question that has already been submitted. A combination of these four features ensures extremely high level of exam integrity.

Question Paper Display can have randomization of question/answers or unique question paper can be created from question banks. This makes collaboration between students or getting external assistance to answer questions very difficult.

Question Display can be controlled to set a maximum time for answering each question. During exam the questions are displayed only for the duration of time set by the question paper setter after which it gets auto-submitted irrespective of whether the student has answered it or not.

DigiProctor also permits the question paper setter to specify that the students can see just one question at a time without facility to go back to the previous question after it has been submitted.

With this in place, cheaters are prevented from waiting for answers from external sources and later going back to answer the question.
